Default E36 Z3 2001 2.2i - Suspension Rattle

Hi All,

Yet another problem with this bloody car! Obviously with the great weather we're having i've been driving around with the hood down and notice a noise from the drivers side rear suspension.

If i sit down in the driver seat hard i have notice the rear drivers side can make a creaking sound and when i drive over speed ramps or bumps in the road there is a rattling sound from the same wheel as if there is something loose.

Does anyone have any ideaa of what this could be? The car is booked for her MOT in 3 weeks side and really can't spend anymore on this as well as replacing the Vanos to cure the running problem. This is my first BMW and has been a total disaster, just hoping there can't be anything else to go wrong!

Your advice will be really appreciated!

Thanks Pete

Try taking the handbrake off then sitting in the car and see if the noise goes,

And for the rattle, make sure the pads, especially the inner ones are tight in the caliper piston, I've known the clips to bend and not hold the pad tight.

Thanks Ronnie, i jumped up and down in the car and the back end squeaked, then did the same with the hand brake off and not a sound! Is there any problem with this or do i need to just live with this as a characteristic?

I will get my garage to check the rear pads at the MOT next week.

Thanks again for your help!

You need the rear handbrake servicing, the dust needs cleaning out and the back plates and pivot points e.t.c should be copper greased up

Also the MOT tester will be limited with what he can check on the MOT, will be better to get the pads checked out when serviced

the rear top mounts can go on Z3's and can be fairly noisy - i would check these.. if these are shot then a good upgrade is the M3 mounts which are harder wearing/longer lasting.. HTH

The car past the MOT yesterday with no advisories and the brakes have aeemed to stop squeaking. As i'm selling the car ASAP due to it being the worst car i have ever owned i'm not prepared to waste anymore time or money on.

Back to good old VW for me!
