Hi All, question, I have an 08 325D sport auto, but from time to time the car does not start. I put the key fob press the start/stop button the engine does not start, everything else electrical works, radio, heaters, sat nav lights, no warning light to point of an issue - except the engine does not start.

if I leave it for about 25/30 min she fires up, and goes along fine, this issue is intermittent - initially when it first happened i called the road assistance and when he came over he checked the battery and voltage was low, so took it to BMW and got that changed.

all fine for 3 months and lest week it happened again, i just waited for 30 min and then she started no probs, this morning again not starting, what could cause the issue? have you had the same?

diagnostic shows no trace or error when my mechanic plug the scanner in... what on earth could cause this?

    its really frustrating..

Hi All, the problem is still persisting, from time to time and when least expected the sodding thing does not start! as I took it to get the parking sensor issue looked at.. ( see my other post) the car got plugged in - no error codes, no faults found, no corrosion no issues with the starter motor, this time I reordered it with my phone I wonder how can I upload this on this site..

Everything electrical works its just not turning the engine.. you leave it for anything between 15 min to say 1 hour and up she comes.. this is so intermittent as an issue. on average it happens 1 a month. the first time it happened was back in Nov and more and more its gets more prominent.

I'm pulling my hairs out here.. any thoughts?

So update on this the recovery truck and mechanic took a look at it and no fault codes. He thinks it's the Key the when it get in the slot for some reason does not disable the immobiliser to let the car start. He advised to have a the immobiliser recoded and new keys. Of course for that the car needs to go to the dealership.

I asked - surely if it's the immobiliser nothing should work, not necessarily the key makes contact but for the engine to turn the immobiliser needs to let it. I dunno I'm really confused and it's sporadic as well...I really do not know what to make of this.

Should I take it to the dealer ? But surely if no codes show and the battery is in perfect working order changed back in October 2016. The starter motor is perfect no corrosions.

What in gods name could cause this ??

Any thoughts on how I can get this problem sorted? realistically now which this occurring so sporadically its starting to worry me, the recovery guy said that with no fault codes its like finding a needle in a haystack.

I'm seriously thinking of getting rid of the car.

Being an auto next time it happens can you move the gearshift know all the way down and back up to park again. Might not be recognising its in park? Again classic signs of a duff starter too.

Hi Jim, thanks for the tip, last night when I got stuck on the petrol forecourt, I gave that a try, keyfob in press the button, and that releases the gear leaver, so slung it all the way back to drive, and back again about 3 times.

but still nothing. the bloody thing would not turn, we gave it a go with the recovery guy.. still nothing, we which the sodding thin on the back of the flat bed.. take it home, unload, and just out of spite put the key fob in and on she comes..

my local indy is a fair guy, and when he looked at the parking sensors, I asked him to just take a good look at the starter motor and the wiring and he could not see any issues. so your advise is to get the starter motor changed?

what's your view on the keys, the recovery guys was somewhat convinced that they keys are not disabling the immobilizer and stops the engine from starting

Just a suggestion, if you have laptop with INPA or similar there are test you can do re key communication / immobilizer, but you would need to have it with you when the fault happens.
