E91 330d M Sport Auto (2005) - Loud Vibration coming through dash at Idle Revs

For the past few days I've noticed a loud vibration coming through the dashboard when the engine is at low / idle revs. It disapears above 700-800 revs. It seems to happen more often when the car is warmed up. The vibration is still there if I shift into Park or Neutral. The car does feel jerky sometimes (shifting gear?) when moving off from a standstill (from what I've read it may just need a software update to solve this).

There are no fault codes according to my Andriod Torque app.

Last night when I was queing to get out of a multi story car park I noticed the vibration / noise also disapeared when the car was on a steep downhill slope.

Outside the car the engine does sound noisy but it is a diesel after all!

The car is under warranty until May but I'm nervous of getting a garrage to try to fix it when the cause may not be obvious. Once the garage has tried one fix the warranty company are unlikely to fund any further attempts (and it could turn out to be something more serious in the long run).

You really need to isolate the source of the noise through the dash. So either through centre vents or where the dash meets the windscreen, or via lower dash or footwells etc.. It would really help identify what the source could be. A lot of the time engine covers and filter covers in the engine bay, as well as the windscreen cowling, can vibrate into the car and make it sound like the dash is vibrating.

In my instance I had a metallic vibrating sound on revving at junctions and idling when cold... it turned out to be fuel pipes knocking against the underbody of the car. I was 100% certain it was the dashboard or something behind the vents!

I'm finding it really hard to isolate the source of the vibration. I think it is more localised towards the top of the dash on the drivers side but can't be sure. I can also feel the vibrations coming through the steering wheel and the front seats.

Could it be the Torque converter? The vibration / noise is there in N or P but it does change tone / frequency in R or D. The car seems to hesitate sometimes when I put my foot down (not past kickdown point) and then all the power comes in at once - it feels a bit like Turbo lag. It's better in sport or manual mode but it's not completely gone (especially from a standing start). It also takes a couple of seconds to shift from Park to Reverse (although Drive to Reverse is instant).

Update - I took the car to my local BMW specialist and they found a heat shield in the engine was loose. They refitted it, the vibration seems a bit better but it's still there. It's really hard to pin point where the vibration is coming from, it seems to be coimng through the drivers side but can't work out where.

Unfortunately the vibration may be the least of my worries as the garage thinks I have an auto gearbox issue. I guess this could be related to the vibration but because it happens in park & neutral as well I'm not so sure (and the garage didn't make the link). Occasionally the car is a bit jerky when pulling off from a stop so I asked them to check I have the latest software updates and also the fluid level. After driving the car they said the car hesitates in all gears before the power comes in and that it's caused by a faulty auto box. Apparently I have the latest software but the fluid level was a little lower than it should be. They topped it up but said if the problem reoccurs the only option is a gearbox rebuild. I trust the garage as I've used them many times bit I'm not completely convinced on this occasion.

I'm not that used to Auto boxes except for my last BMW (e46 325i) and I don't remember that feeling any different (could have also had an issue I guess). Sometimes there is a hestitation before the all the power comes in when you put your foot down (I don't tend to use kick down) but I put this down to the Turbo kicking in and that the delayed surge in power feels exagerated due to all the Torque this engine has. I can't detect any kind of slipping coming from the box.

It doesn't feel any different since the fluid top up and is still jerky in 1st on occasion.

Does this hestitation sound like a auto gearbox issue or is it just normal for this engine / gearbox?
