A little background, I bought my car on Sunday, tyre pressure warning came on when bringing car back, and have had to pump tyre up everyday since (with the intention of booking into a tyre fitters). Tyre popped on way home from work on Tuesday and on removal of wheel I found 3 sizeable welds. The guy I bought it from stated "there is no issue with the wheel, large rim alloy wheels crack and are repaired all the time, the wheel was professionally repaired over a year ago and is completely safe, if it is losing air, fill it with tyre weld for about 10 pounds, that will sort it".
Whereas my friend says it should never have been fixed like this and is dodgy and the seller should resolve the issue.
Any thoughts would be appreciated, photos of welds below:
It is possible to repair wheels with no problems. The weld in the first picture has not taken and has cracked along the side of the welded section. As the wheel has already been repaired I would suggest it is past it's serviceable best.
Cheers
Jim
is that just 1 wheel?
wheels being welded isnt the best thing in the world but people do it without problems.
have you poured water over it to see exactly where the air is leaking out?
i dont think tyre weld would be the best repair.
Thanks for the replies, yeah I was thinking if it has been repaired once it's unlikely to take again.
And yes danidge, it is just 1 wheel, haven't tried pouring water, hadn't got that far before tyre burst..
Issue I'm having is the wheels on this one seem to be impossible to source and I don't think they are available anymore! :duh
style and shape of the wheel sez that rear rim was always gonna be weak lookin at it.. the spokes and strength are all right at the front of the wheel and the dish of the wheel and the metal looks thin....
Get them repaired properly. A hole needs to be drilled at the start of the crack, the stressed metal cut out, then filled. Do it properly and they will not reappear.
Took it to a repairer a week or so ago for his opinion - He was only prepared to repair it as a last resort, along with the 3 welds, there were 4 further cracks, and he said 2 of the welds were very close together and he was concerned a chunk of wheel could have come off if I were to hit a pot-hole a bit hard!
