    Good evening...
Has anyone got these with the alloy bars?
Called BMW dealer - he says the bars only work with BMW roof-box and vice versa, due to the unique fitting system.
Now 175 for bars and 350 for the 320l box (only in silver finish now) -

Does this mean that the bars will be no use for boxes that just clip on to the bars? Surely bars are bars? I have some Halfords Bike racks that I wanna use.

Anyone recommend the Thule ones instead... if so which ones?

    Cheers!
Seems a bit of a closed system to me... but I'm happy to be persuaded otherwise.

Thule make some really good stuff, especially the 591 Bike carriers, I'd go with their system

    Thanks.
I will look into this... I just like the neatness of the BMW locks, but don't want to paint myself into a corner.

I have just put a pair of Thule 561s and also a 591 on my E90 - a really solid fit and having just used them on 200 mile round trip this weekend, very much better than the Halfords ones we ran on the wife's car previously. A friend of ours also put them on an E91 recently and I know he was pleased with them - did the same 200 mile trip without incident. I have no experience of the BMW ones so cannot comment on how they compare. The roof bars are a bit fiddly to fit in the first instance but am sure that gets easier with practice - the bike carriers themselves slide in to the aero bars, which is a really quick instalation.

Main draw back is the cost - you will need the feet + the feet adaptors for your car + bars + 561/591s - cost me c430 including the 3x bike carriers at 90 each. You can get the 591s at about 65/70 on places like ebay (new) but i didnt have time to risk waiting for delivery. The 561s seem to be 85/90 pretty much everywhere. More expensive than some bikes, but then again they feel like they will last for ever and I didnt feel like checking my rear view mirror nearly as often as i did when using the Halfords ones previously !

One last thing, if you have quick release front wheels on your bikes then i would suggest the 561s rather than the 591s as they just feel more secure (means you have to carry the front wheel in the car or buy the optional front wheel carrier).

ps. also worth buying the lock kit (before assembling them) if you want to have all the keys the same (you will need 4x locks for the feet + 2 for each cycle carrier).

Thule are first class but I would go to the THULE web site to get the correct foot pack and bars. The roof rails changed on the e91 and sure enough the price went up. Cotswould bmw may give you a good price on the real bars but I got mine from the roofbox co and ebay.
